Men are born ignorant, not stupid, they are made stupid by education.
So long as authority inspires awe, confusion and absurdity enhance conservative tendencies in society. Firstly, because clear and logical thinking leads to cumulating of knowledge (of which the progress of the natural sciences provides the best example); And the advance of knowledge sooner or later undermines the traditional order. Confused thinking, on the other hand, leads nowhere in particular and can be indulged indefininitely without producing any impact upon the world.
(Francis Bacon, 1562 - 1626):
Empiricists are like ants, they collect and put to use; but rationalists are like spiders, spin threads out of themselves.
Concepts without factual content are empty; sense data without concepts are blind. The understandingcannot see; the senses cannot think. Only their union only can knowledge be produced.
Weak men who have little extent of ability for, or have had little experience in reasoning, are more liable to be attached to frivolous theories.
