“Calming the Winds and Waves”
—— by SU SHI (1037-1101) (Northern Song Dynasty)
—— Translated by Frank C Yue
Handsome men I’d always envy,
Heav’n favours them with girls pretty.
She writes her own songs refreshing,
Through her white teeth she’s a-singing.
It is like when blows the breeze
The snows fly and the hot seas
Become cool as cool can be.
Returning from a place far-away,
The songster sports a younger face.
Whenever she is smiling
There’s southern plum fragrance beguiling.
I ask of her,
Guangtung shouldn’t be a good place to stay?
By her reply I’m amazed –
Hometown is where the heart settles down.
